Connecting Through Meditation-
Getting in touch with the treasures within you is one way of connecting with the source of Life. For within you are all the answers to all the questions you shall ever ask. Wisdom past, present, and future is available to you. The source of Life knows everything. Some people call this connecting process meditation.
Meditation is a process that is so simple, and yet there is much confusion about it. Some people are afraid to meditate because they think it is spooky or weird or has something to do with the occult. We often fear that which we do not understand. Still other people lament that they can't meditate because they are always thinking. Well, it is the nature of the mind to think; you will never turn the mind off completely.
Continuing to regularly practice meditation will help to quiet the mind. Meditation is a way of bypassing the chatter of the mind to go to the deeper levels, to connect with the inner wisdom. We are worthy of taking time each day to get in touch with the inner voice, to listen to the answers that come from the inner master. If we don't, then we are only operating on 5 to 10 percent of what is really available to us.
There are many methods of learning to meditate. There are all sorts of classes and books. It could be as simple as sitting in silence with the eyes closed for a short period of time. You might go through the following steps if you're just beginning to meditate:
• You can sit quietly. Close your eyes, take one deep breath, relax your body, and then just concentrate on your breathing. Pay attention to your breathing. Don't try to breathe in a special way. Just be aware of how you are breathing. You will notice that after a few minutes, your breathing will slow down. This is normal and natural as your body relaxes.
• It often helps to count while breathing. One on the inhale, two on the exhale. Three on the inhale, and four on the exhale. Continue in this manner until you reach ten. Then begin again at one. After you do this for a while, you may find your mind wandering to a football game or your shopping list. That's all right.
• When you notice that you are not counting, just begin again at one, and continue with your counting. The wandering of the mind will happen several times. Each time, gently bring it back to the simple counting routine. That is all there is to it.
This simple form of meditation calms the mind and the body and helps create the connection with our inner wisdom. The benefits of meditation are cumulative. The more often you meditate, the longer you continue to meditate, the better it gets. You will find yourself being more peaceful during the day when you are just going about your ordinary business. And if a crisis comes up, you will handle it in a calmer way.
I often suggest that people begin with just five minutes of sitting or breathing or counting, or whatever form of meditation you choose. Do this once a day for a week or two. Then you might progress to doing it for five minutes twice a day—first thing in the morning and in the early evening, perhaps you might try meditating right after work, or when you get home at night. The body and the mind love routine, you can manage to do your meditation at more or less the same time every day, the benefits will increase.
Don't expect much of anything to happen for the first month. Just do your practice. Your mind and body are adjusting to a new rhythm, a new sense of peacefulness. If it is difficult to sit still at the beginning, and if you find that you keep peeking at your watch, use a timer. After a few days, your body will adjust to the time period, and you can discard the timer.
Be gentle with yourself as you learn meditation. No matter what you do, YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG. You are learning a new skill. It will get easier and easier. In a relatively short period of time, your body will look forward to the meditation periods.
The ideal time periods to practice meditation are 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the later afternoon or early evening. Do not be discouraged if it takes you quite some time to work up to this amount of meditation. Just do what you can. Five minutes EVERY DAY is better than twenty minutes once a week.
Many people use a mantra. This can be an Indian Sanskrit word like Om or Hu, or a soothing word such as love or peace, or two words. Instead of counting your breathing, you would use the mantra/word on the inhalation and the exhalation. You may choose two or three words to be your mantra, such as "I am" or "God is," or "I am love" or "All is well." Use one or two words on the inhalation and the other word on the exhalation. [My mantra: I am the Christ... I am one with God.]
So you see, the word or the method is not important. The stillness and the repetition of the gentle breathing are.
A popular form of meditation is TM, or Transcendental Meditation. TM offers a program that gives you a simple mantra to use and some guidance classes. However, these classes have become rather expensive. If you want to spend the money, that's fine; they are a nice bunch of people to be around. But know that you can also achieve great results on your own.
Many community yoga classes begin and end with a short meditation. These classes are usually quite inexpensive, and you can learn a series of gentle stretching exercises that are very beneficial to the body. If you go to your local health food store or community center, I am sure you will find more than one meditation or yoga class listed on their bulletin board.
Religious Science and Unity churches often teach meditation classes. Senior citizen groups and even some hospitals have classes in meditation. If you visit the bookstores or libraries in your area, you will find that there are many books on meditation, some easier to understand than others.
Health programs such as Dr. Dean Ornish's Healthy Heart Program, and Dr. Deepak Chopra's Body, Mind & Spirit Program also include meditation as an important part of the wellness process.
But no matter where or how you learn to meditate, whatever method you begin with, you will in time develop your own form of meditation. Your inner wisdom and intelligence will subtlety alter your process until it is just right for you.
For myself, I began meditating many years ago using a mantra. Because I was still so uptight and frightened at the time, every time I meditated I would get a headache. This lasted for three weeks. As my body and mind began to relax, perhaps for the first time in my life, the headaches ceased. I have been meditating ever since, and I have attended many classes over the years.
They each offer a slightly different method of meditation. All methods have benefits, although they may not all be right for you. Like anything else in life, find the method of meditation that works best for you. You may choose to change methods over the years. And I am sure you will.
Remember, meditation is merely a way of you getting in touch with your own inner guidance. While we are always connected with this guidance as we go about our day, it is easier for us to consciously connect when we sit quietly and listen.
How I Meditate
My personal routines do change from time to time. For today, I always meditate in the morning; it is the best way for me to begin my day. I often meditate in the afternoon, but not always. My morning meditation is usually done sitting in bed. I close my eyes and take a conscious breath or two. Then silently I say, "What is it I need to know?" or "This is the beginning of a good day." Then I allow myself to go into the silence and just be. Sometimes I will notice my breath, and sometimes I won't. Sometimes I notice thoughts, and when I do, I will just observe them. I might acknowledge to myself, "Oh, that's a worry thought, or that's a business thought, or that's a loving thought." I just let the thoughts pass through.
After about 20 or 30 minutes, when I intuitively know that it is time to finish, I take a deep breath. Then I do a form of treatment or prayer, which I say aloud. Perhaps it might go like this:
"There is one infinite power in the Universe, and this power is right where I am. I am not lost or alone or abandoned or helpless. I am one with the Power that created me. If there is any belief within me that would deny this truth, then I erase it right here and now.
I know I am a Divine, Magnificent, Expression of Life. I am one with Infinite Wisdom, Love, and Creativity. I am an example of vibrant health and energy. I am loving and loved. I am peaceful. This day is a glorious expression of Life.
Each experience I have is joyous and loving. I bless with Divine Love my body, my pets, my home, my work, and each and every person I come into contact with today. This is a great day, and I rejoice in it! And so it is!"
Then I open my eyes, get up, and enjoy my day!
SPIRITUAL AFFIRMATIONS
(Perhaps you haven't learned to feel connected yet. Well, affirmations can help in this area, too. You can say all of the following each day, or just pick one or two to use until you develop some peacefulness and inner knowing within you.)
I HAVE A STRONG SPIRITUAL CONNECTION. LIFE SUPPORTS ME AT EVERY TURN. I TRUST LIFE TO BE THERE FOR ME. I FEEL AT ONE WITH ALL OF LIFE. I BELIEVE IN A LOVING GOD.
THE POWER THAT CREATED THE WORLD BEATS MY HEART. I AM DIVINELY PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES. I AM DIVINELY GUIDED AT ALL TIMES. I HAVE A SPECIAL GUARDIAN ANGEL. I AM SAFE WHEREVER I TURN. LIFE/GOD LOVES ME.
